A Late-Summer Weekend In Westchase: What's New, What's Open, And Where To Walk

By 7:30 on an August morning the Ehrlich Road trailhead is already claimed. Bikes leaning against the fence outside Florida Cracker Fish Company, a couple of strollers rolling south toward Wilsky, the water kiosk hissing as somebody refills a bottle before the sun clears the oaks. If you live in 33626, you know this scene. What you might not know is how much of it has quietly shifted in the last six months.

This is not the Westchase of a year ago. A culvert repair has rerouted a familiar walk. A comfort-food staple that anchored Countryway for years is gone. Three fast-casual concepts have opened or announced along Linebaugh. The WCA pulled its own summer camp for the first time in recent memory. None of it is dramatic on its own. Taken together, the weekend rhythm most residents settled into last summer no longer quite fits.

The Trail, Minus One Culvert

The Upper Tampa Bay Trail is the closest thing Westchase has to a shared front yard. About 300,000 people use it every year, and it runs 11.45 miles in two paved segments with a longstanding 2-mile gap between Peterson and Van Dyke roads that a county study is currently trying to figure out how to close.

Since January 7, there has been a second gap, and this one matters more for daily use. Hillsborough County closed a section east of Sheldon Road and north of the Channel A waterway near West Waters Avenue to replace a large culvert that Hurricanes Helene and Milton damaged in October 2024. The county did not publish a completion date. The nearest open trailheads bracketing the closure are 9201 W. Waters Ave and 10338 Wilsky Blvd, and neighborhood access points between them are still usable.

If your usual route runs through the Waters-to-Wilsky stretch, plan on entering from either end and turning back, not passing through.

The good news, for anyone tired of running in full sun through July and August, is that shade is easier to find than most residents realize. Start at Rocky Creek Trails Nature Preserve at 7415 Manhattan Drive, pay the $2 to park, and turn right when the preserve path joins the UTBT. That direction stays shaded almost the whole way to Ehrlich Road, roughly 1.5 miles round trip, with a water bench near the sign at the far end. It is the coolest mile and a half in the neighborhood before 9 a.m.

Further south, the county unveiled a $2.2 million bridge over Rocky Creek in June 2025 to replace a 112-year-old wooden span that was declared unstable in 2024. If you cycled the southern segment before the storms and thought it felt rough, ride it again. The bank reinforcement and sidewalk work around the Northwest County Solid Waste Facility bridge at 8001 W. Linebaugh Ave were also done in 2025.

Where To Eat When You Don't Feel Like Cooking

Linebaugh Avenue is where you see the shift most clearly. Three data points, all recent:

Saucy! is the KFC spinoff built around chicken tenders and a lineup of more than 12 sauces, with self-serve kiosks and a drive-through. The Westchase soft opening on February 16 was the second Tampa Bay location after Waters Avenue, ahead of Temple Terrace, Carrollwood, Trinity, and Bradenton in the rolling rollout announced in January.

Doodle Noodle Bar is the more interesting arrival, if only because you cannot describe it without sounding like you are making it up. The Vongprachanh brothers behind Twenty Pho Hour in Orlando built a black-and-white illustrated interior at 9620 W. Linebaugh, with murals by an artist who travels between their locations. The Westchase theme is a house, and the "windows" painted on the walls look out onto outer space, a jungle, and the Jurassic era. The pho is real.

MEMO Modern Italian, in the Montague strip near Catch Twenty-Three, has become the neighborhood's default sit-down Italian since opening. Fresh pasta made in-house, half-off wine bottles on Wednesdays, and a menu built to travel well for takeout. If you know Zerillo's on Countryway for New York style pizza and old-world classics, MEMO is the counterpoint at the other end of the neighborhood.

Tampa Bay Brewing Company still holds down 13937 Monroe's Business Park with 17,400 square feet of brewery-plus-restaurant and Saturday tours by reservation. It is worth mentioning because it makes the Westchase food map read more like a mixed-use district than a suburb: craft brewery, Modern Italian, illustrated pho house, drive-thru chicken, and Florida Cracker at the trailhead all within a few minutes of each other.

What Westchase Lost

Mother's closed its Westchase location and reopened in Northdale in June. For anyone who used it as their default weekend breakfast for the last decade, the departure landed harder than the arrivals of Saucy! or Doodle Noodle combined. It is the kind of quiet loss that does not show up in a "best of" roundup but reshapes where a lot of residents actually eat on Sunday morning.

The Tampa Bay Times covered it under a broader story about restaurants adapting to a slow summer season. That framing matters. Westchase is not immune to the same pressures reshaping food-service rents and traffic across Tampa Bay right now, which is part of why the Linebaugh openings are notable even when the concepts themselves are unfamiliar. New capital is still choosing this corridor.

The Calendar Gap

If you have kids in the neighborhood, one shift you already noticed: the WCA Board suspended the 2026 Westchase Summer Camp Program at the Countryway Swim & Tennis Center to conduct what they described as a re-evaluation of scope and future improvements. It is the first pause in recent years for a program a lot of families treated as a default.

The gap opened up space for other programming. The WOW Summer Camp Expo ran at the Westchase Park and Recreation Center at 9791 Westchase Drive on February 25, with parents meeting camp staff from across Tampa Bay under one roof. iCode Westchase, at 11669 W. Hillsborough Ave, ran a summer camp open house on April 12 built around Minecraft, Roblox, robotics, and 3D design. Westchase Music School at 11301 Countryway Blvd continues its Myths & Legends camp week and its Friday evening Let's Make Art class for kids six and up.

For the runners, the Great West Chase is back on the calendar and the Tampa Summer Bundle from the same organizer packages three races together for 25% off individual registration. Under the Lights flag football runs its spring and fall Friday-night seasons out of Westchase for grades pre-K through 8, with top teams from the spring earning invites to the summer national championship held in Tampa.

A Weekend, Assembled

Put the pieces together and a resident's late-summer Saturday looks something like this. Early ride from Peterson Road Park south on the UTBT, cutting the ride short at the Waters closure and looping back for breakfast at Florida Cracker Fish Company next to the Ehrlich trailhead. Errands through Westchase Town Center. Half-off wine bottle at MEMO on a Wednesday evening with friends who used to meet at Mother's. Sunday morning shaded walk from Rocky Creek out and back before the heat lands.
